Almost anyone you ask will say they are concerned with
their diet. So why do so many people make such poor
nutritional choices? Improper diet can lead to a variety
of problems, and eventually lead to obesity, heart
problems, joint and arthritis problems, and overall bad
health. There are many things that you can do to slowly
improve the way that you eat and the foods that are a part
of your everyday diet. By starting to make small changes
you will find that it is easier to accept the change. If
you decide that you are going to take drastic measures to
improve your daily diet you find that you revert back to
your earlier eating habits when the cravings start to
happen.
Fruits and vegetables should be the centerpiece of your
daily diet. Choose dark colored vegetables, such as leafy
greens, for your salad. Select fruits that are high in
essential vitamins, such as bananas or oranges. Begin by
slowly increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables that
you eat on a daily basis, and before you know it, you'll be
eating the proper amount of fresh foods.
Next, consider what types of grain and breads you're eating.
Breads and pastries made with white or other refined flour
offer no nutritional value. On the other hand, whole grains
are full of fiber, vitamins and minerals. You might consider
eating a bran cereal for breakfast as a way to start
changing your habits. It won't take that long to realize
that whole grains actually taste good as well as make you
feel healthier.
Try to limit the amount of red meats that you eat and start
reaching for healthier choices such as fish and poultry.
Reduce the amount of fat that you eat in your diet, no only
animal fat but other fats as well. When you are cooking
choose healthy oils such as virgin olive oil and canola
oil. When at all possible try to bake or poach your fish
and poultry, reducing the amount of fat in your diet even
more. Eliminate or reduce the amount of fried foods that
you consume, such as donuts and potato chips. Reach for
healthier choices such as popcorn (with a limited amount of
butter) and rice cakes.
Do you crave sweets? Try eating dried fruit or low fat
cookies or ice cream rather than cakes and cookies. You
might also like low fat candy. It takes time to change your
eating habits, but you'll succeed if you are patient and
determined. The bonuses are that you will feel healthier, be
more active, and realize that these healthy foods are
actually more satisfying than you ever imagined.
