Maintaining Your Long Term Health

Everyone sees health as a priority these days. Young people
in particular are concerned with their look and place a
high need on being slim and fit, while middle age people in
their forties and fifties are concerned about expanding
waist lines and a need to maintain weight and cholesterol
down older people are more concerned with illnesses that
can occur.
There are many diet fads that are available, everything
from the Atkins diet, the California diet, and a variety of
weight loss programs. We hear of movie stars gaining weight
for movies, then almost miraculously losing it for the next
movie. We all want to follow their lead and many people
will do almost anything to lose weight and give that
appearance of health and good looks.
No matter what your age, the health industry is a multi
billion dollar entity boasting many fast cures, pills to
reduce weight, liposuction, stomach stapling, extreme
makeovers and so on. Models and Supermodels featured in
magazines really do not represent the average person at
all, man or woman. Most men just do not have that muscle
bound look of fitness that we see on TV. Likewise, most
women do not look like the bone thin models we see in
beauty magazines and on the fashion runways. With such slim
bodies and ultra proportioned features, they simply defy
nature. So, with all these images bombarding us what does
the average person do, to stay healthy?
Health experts recommend that you exercise at least three
times a week and consume a well balanced diet that is full
of fruit and vegetables. You should also avoid sugary
snacks. Basically if you have everything in moderation then
you will live a healthy life with out the risk of having
any health related problems. Along with fruit and
vegetables you should also include plenty of dairy products
and carbohydrates as well as protein.
Exercise is absolutely mission critical in life
particularly for people who have very sedentary jobs.
Exercising at least 30 minutes over 3 days per week, will
improve the condition of your heart, lungs and general
health. A mere 30-minute walk at lunch time even make a
small difference.
There are people who run marathons and other extreme
sports. While they are very fit, the body is really not
meant for that sort of extreme impact. Over time as you
age, joints will wear out and you may have health related
problems later in life.
Life itself is a marathon and it is important that we do
things that foster ongoing good health.
